HiPP German Stage 1 Formula

HiPP German Stage 1 formula is a nutritionally complete baby formula designed for babies from birth to 6 months of age. The product can be used to replace breast milk or can be used as a complement to breastfeeding.

The formula contains Omega-3, and Omega-6 fatty acids to support optimal visual and brain development, and also provides prebiotics and probiotics to improve digestibility and enhance immunity.

HiPP is a German-based, family-owned company that specializes in producing high-quality, organic baby formulas.

The company is committed to quality and sustainability at every level of production. Not only do they source all dairy products used in their formulas from certified organic farms, but every ingredient they use is then continually tested before it goes into your baby’s formula.

Additionally, all of HiPP’s formulas are European Union certified-organic which means that formula is ethically-sourced and free of GMOs, artificial colors, and preservatives.

HiPP takes its commitment to organic production to a new level by introducing its very own HiPP organic seal to their products which goes above and beyond many of the conventional European Union organic standards.

Pros and Cons of HiPP German Stage 1 Formula

Pros:

  • Provides 100% organic ingredients free from GMOs, refined sugar, corn syrup, and soy.
  • Contains prebiotics and probiotics to help promote improved digestion.
  • Provides DHA and Omega-3, which can support healthy vision and brain development.
  • Has its own HiPP organic seal which is stricter than many of the conventional European Union organic standards.

Cons:

  • Contains lactose so isn’t suitable for babies who are lactose intolerant or have milk protein allergies.
  • Uses starch and not lactose as the main carbohydrate source which doesn’t mimic breast milk as closely.
  • Uses palm oil which could potentially impact nutrient absorption.
  • Contains fish oil so it’s not suitable for babies with a fish allergy.

Ingredients of HiPP German Stage 1 Formula

The ingredients in HiPP German Stage 1 formula are designed to meet the nutritional needs of babies from birth to 6 months and are as follows:

Organic Skim Milk, Organic Whey Powder, Organic Vegetable Oils [Organic Palm Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Rapeseed Oil], Organic Starch, Organic Galacto-Oligosaccharides From Organic Lactose, Organic Lactose, Fish Oil, Calcium Chloride, Potassium Citrate, Mortierella Alpina Oil (ARA), Choline, L-Tyrosine, Sodium Citrate, Calcium Carbonate, L-Tryptophan, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Sulfate, L-Histidine, Lactic Acid, Calcium Orthophosphates, Vitamin C, Natural Lactic Acid Culture (Lactobacillus Fermentum Hereditum), Niacin, Vitamin E, Pantothenic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Potassium Iodate, Folic Acid, Vitamin B6, Sodium Selenate, Vitamin K, Manganese Sulfate, Vitamin D, Biotin, Vitamin B12.

HiPP German Stage 1 formula is derived from organic skim milk which serves as the primary protein, along with organic starch as the primary carbohydrate. One drawback to using starch and not lactose as the primary carbohydrate source is that lactose is the main carbohydrate in breast milk and therefore mimics breast milk more closely.

However, the product uses whey protein which is a nice addition as it contains all nine essential amino acids which are fundamental for growth and can only be obtained through food. Additionally, their German Stage 1 formula will have a protein ratio that is similar to breastmilk as approximately 60 to 80% of all protein in breast milk is whey protein.

The product provides a nice blend of organic vegetable oils including organic palm oil, organic sunflower oil, and organic rapeseed oil. While palm oil is a popular addition to many US and European formulas, it may cause some digestive issues like gas for some babies.

Furthermore, there’s some evidence to suggest that palm oil has the potential to reduce the absorption of calcium and fat. However, since HiPP relies on a blend of oils rather than exclusively on palm oil, the likelihood of having an issue with nutrient absorption is minimal.

HiPP German Stage 1 is enriched with prebiotics in the form of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). These are the same prebiotics that are naturally found in breast milk and can promote improved healthy digestion. In addition to prebiotics, the formula also provides probiotics which have been shown to improve digestion and absorption of nutrients and fluids.

The product also provides  omega-3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and omega-6 ARA(arachidonic acid) derived from fish oil and vegetable oils and are especially important for brain and visual development.

Nutrients in HiPP German Stage 1 Formula

HiPP German Stage 1 is intended to be a complete baby formula, meaning it will provide 100% of the nutritional requirements for babies from birth to 6 months old. While HiPP’s German Stage 1 formula provides most of the vitamins and minerals required by the FDA, it does fall short of the current requirements for iron.

Although the formula meets the European guidelines for iron (0.2 mg per serving), the FDA requires that baby formula should have at least 1 mg of iron for every 100 calories. HiPP German Stage 1 formula provides 0.6 mg of iron per 100 calories, meeting European guidelines but falling short of the FDA requirements.

It’s important to note that most babies are born with all of the iron they will need up until 4 to 6 months of age. Therefore, the additional iron in baby formulas may not be necessary until a baby reaches 4 to 6 months old. It is always best to speak with your child’s pediatrician to help determine their specific iron requirements.

The addition of DHA in the formula is important to support optimal early eye and brain development. However, the DHA in HiPP’s formula is derived from fish oil, which could be a problem for anyone with a fish allergy.

Side Effects of HiPP German Stage 1 Formula

HiPP German Stage 1 formula is likely to be tolerated in most healthy babies. However, since the product is milk-based and contains lactose, it is not suitable for babies that may be sensitive to lactose or lactose intolerant. Additionally, the formula should not be given to any babies with a milk allergy.

Furthermore, since the product contains fish oil, those with a fish allergy should avoid using the formula.

HiPP German Stage 1 should not be used for babies that are older than 6 months as the formula is not designed to meet the nutritional needs of older babies.

How HiPP German Stage 1 Formula Compares

HiPP German Stage 1 vs. Similac Organic

Both HiPP and Similac organic contain essential vitamins and minerals along with DHA for optimal growth and development. Their ingredients are both organic and are free of GMOs.

HiPP German Stage 1 provides a nutritional profile that is similar to Similac organic but uses palm oil whereas Similac organic does not. Palm oil has the potential to interfere with nutrient absorption.

However, Similac organic contains soy oil which may be problematic for babies that are sensitive or allergic to soy. HiPP German Stage one contains both prebiotics and probiotics to support digestive health while Similac organic provides just prebiotics in the form of Fructooligosaccharides (FOS).

HiPP German Stage 1 vs. Happy Baby Organic Infant Formula

HiPP German Stage 1 and Happy Baby Organic Infant Formula stage 1 are nutritionally similar and are designed to support the growth and development of babies from birth to 6 months old. While HiPP contains one type of prebiotic (GOS), Happy Baby provides both GOS and FOS which can aid in digestion by supporting healthy gut bacteria.

Happy Baby organic formula contains organic soy oil which is not suitable for babies with a sensitivity or allergy to soy.

HiPP German Stage 1 vs. Earth’s Best Organic Formula

Both HiPP German Stage 1 and Earth’s Best Organic Formula are made from organic milk without the use of harmful additives. While both formulas have a similar nutrition profile, Earth’s Best only contains prebiotics, unlike HiPP which contains both prebiotics and probiotics.

Additionally, users of Earth’s Best complain that the powder can be difficult to mix with water, and when blended the product is foamy which may contribute to gas problems for some babies.

Bottom Line

HiPP is a well-trusted brand known for their high quality, organic ingredients and commitment to sustainable farming practices. HiPP German Stage 1 formula is a nutritionally complete baby formula designed for babies from birth to 6 months of age. The formula has some nice additions like Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to support vision and brain development. They also include prebiotics and probiotics to enhance digestibility.

HiPP German Stage 1 formula uses starch as the primary carbohydrate rather than lactose. This may be considered a downside since the inclusion of lactose would mimic breast milk more closely. However, they also include whey protein which is the same protein found in breastmilk.

The formula is an excellent choice for parents looking for an organic formula to support their baby’s growth and development. When choosing a formula, it is best to speak to your child’s pediatrician about which formula will meet your baby’s unique nutritional needs.

FAQ

You’ll first boil water and let it cool to roughly 122°F. Then, add about half of the water you’ll use to your bottle. You’ll use 1 ounce of water for every level scoop of dry formula. After adding the formula, shake the bottle until the powder has dissolved. Add the rest of the water and shake the bottle again. Let it cool until it reaches approximately 99.5°F.

Yes, HiPP baby formula is safe. All of HiPP’s formulas are European Union certified-organic which means that formula is free of GMOs, artificial colors, and preservatives and is perhaps safer than FDA standards. Additionally, HiPP has introduced their own  HiPP organic seal to their products which goes above and beyond many of the conventional European Union organic standards.

HiPP stage 1 formula is intended for babies 0 to 6 months of age, while HiPP stage 2 is intended for babies between the ages of 6 to 12 months.

One of the biggest differences between HiPP stage 1 and stage 2 is that stage 2 has more iron than stage 1 because your baby’s natural iron stores tend to be depleted by 6 months of age.

Additionally, compared to stage 1, stage 2 has slightly more calories, fat, and carbohydrates to support your growing baby’s increased calorie needs

In order to better suit different markets in Europe, HiPP slightly adapted their formulas and has both a Dutch category and a German category in their cow’s milk line. The main difference between HiPP German Stage 1 and HiPP Dutch stage 1 is the German version contains starch whereas the Dutch version does not.

HiPP German Stage 1 baby formula is made in Germany and the FDA only regulates formulas manufactured in the United States.

However, HiPP German Stage 1 formula is made in Europe and is required to meet the European Commission’s standards for food products, which can be even stricter than FDA standards.

HiPP specializes in producing high-quality, organic baby formulas that are designed to meet the nutritional needs of your baby. The formulas are not only good for babies but they have additional nutrients including DHA to support vision and brain development and prebiotics and probiotics to enhance gut health.
