Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 Formula

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 is a powdered infant formula that is prepared by mixing with water. It’s designed to meet the nutrition needs of babies from 6 to 10 months old. This formula may be a logical next choice for babies who have been fed Holle Goat Stage 1 during the first six months of life. It can also be given to supplement babies who begin weaning from breastmilk around 6 months of age.

Although goat’s milk is a type of dairy and contains lactose, it differs compositionally from cow’s milk. The protein and lactose composition of goat’s milk can be easier to digest for babies who experience digestive issues, such as gas and diarrhea, from consuming cow’s milk based formula.

Holle is a European producer of organic baby food, including infant and toddler formulas.

Holle’s baby food products, including Goat Stage 2 formula, are organic and manufactured without the use of any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, chemical processing, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

They’re also Demeter-certified, which goes a step beyond European organic certification requirements to ensure the quality of their ingredients. All of Holle’s ingredients are sourced from Demeter farms committed to sustainability, ecosystem preservation, and ethical agricultural practices.

Ingredients of Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 Formula

Here is the complete ingredient list for the Dutch version of Holle Goat Stage 2 Formula:

Organic Whole Goat’s Milk Powder 38.5%, Organic Maltodextrin, Organic Vegetable Oils (Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Rapeseed Oil), Organic Lactose, Organic Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Hydroxide, Calcium Citrate, Algae Oil (DHA), L-Cystine, Iron Sulfate, Magnesium Chloride, Vitamin C, L-Tryptophan, L-Tyrosine, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Iron Lactate, Vitamin E, Zinc Sulfate, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B2, Manganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Vitamin K, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D3, Biotin, Vitamin B12.

Holle Goat Dutch Stage 2 contains a mix of carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals to meet the nutrition needs of growing babies. The main sources of macronutrients in this formula are goat’s milk powder (protein), maltodextrin (carbohydrate), lactose (carbohydrate), and vegetable oils (fat).

Goat’s milk contains some of the same proteins as cow’s milk but in different proportions. While cow’s milk contains mostly A1 casein protein, goat’s milk contains more A2 casein protein and less A1. A2 protein is gentler on digestion and may be better tolerated by babies who experience digestive upset from drinking infant formula made with cow’s milk.

Goat’s milk also contains less lactose than cow’s milk, so babies who are sensitive to lactose may have an easier time digesting this formula.

Holle Goat Stage 2 does not contain any artificial colors or flavors, sugar, preservatives, chemicals, soy, palm oil, or GMOs.

Nutrients in Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 Formula

The nutrients in Holle Goat Stage 2 formula are designed to meet 100% of your baby’s nutritional needs at this specific life stage.

Holle Goat Stage 2 is the next phase formula for babies who started on Holle Goat Stage 1. Both formulas contain similar amounts of calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Most of the vitamin and mineral content is also similar, but Holle Goat Stage 2 contains more of the following nutrients to support the needs of older babies:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Some B vitamins

The increased amounts of calcium and iron in this formula are especially noteworthy. Calcium is essential for the development of strong bones and teeth and iron plays a role in the production of red blood cells.

Both the German and Dutch versions of Holle Goat Stage 1 contain choline and inositol (a type of carbohydrate), but these nutrients are not added to Goat Stage 2. However, goat’s milk naturally contains some choline and small amounts of inositol, so there may be some present not listed on the label.

This formula contains added DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) in the form of microalgae oil. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is needed for the healthy development of the eyes and brain.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has requirements for the amount of certain nutrients that American formulas must contain. The protein and fat content in Holle Goat Stage 2 exceeds the FDA’s minimum threshold for American formulas. There is no FDA requirement for carbohydrates in baby formula. Holle Goat Stage 2 also contains the same vitamins and minerals the FDA requires in American formulas.

Side Effects of Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 Formula

Holle Goat Stage 2 is not appropriate for babies with a diagnosed milk allergy or severe lactose intolerance. A milk allergy is an allergic reaction to the proteins found in dairy milk. Goat’s milk contains some of the same proteins as cow’s milk which can trigger an allergic response.

Lactose intolerance occurs when babies lack the digestive enzyme lactase which breaks down the lactose found in dairy. Goat’s milk is not lactose-free so babies with strong lactose intolerance may experience digestive issues, like bloating and diarrhea if they are given this formula.

Babies who are simply sensitive to cow’s milk or lactose, meaning they experience digestive upset, may tolerate goat’s milk with fewer digestive issues.

Speak with your child’s doctor if you have questions about whether a goat’s milk formula is right for your baby.

How Holle Goat Dutch Stage 2 Formula Compares

There are more goat’s milk baby formulas available in Europe and other countries compared to the United States. Here’s how Holle Goat Stage 2 compares to some other options:

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 vs HiPP Dutch Goat Stage 2 Formula

HiPP Goat Stage 2 is for babies 6 to 12 months old. Both formulas are organic, designed for easier digestion, and contain added DHA. The DHA in HiPP is sourced from fish oil, which some babies may be allergic to.

The macronutrient, vitamin, and mineral content are similar between the two formulas, but Holle Goat Stage 2 contains higher amounts of vitamins A, E, and K per 3 ounces prepared. The HiPP formula has added prebiotic galactooligosaccharides. Some oligosaccharides naturally occur in goat’s milk, but the HiPP formula probably contains a higher amount since it’s also listed on the ingredients.

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 vs Jovie Goat Milk Stage 2 Formula

Jovie is also an organic goat’s milk formula produced in the Netherlands. Their Goat Milk Stage 2 formula is made for babies aged 6 to 12 months, compared to Holle’s which is intended for babies 6 to 10 months old.

Like Holle, Jovie contains added DHA but also has added ARA (arachidonic acid) and prebiotic galactooligosaccharides. The DHA in Jovie is sourced from fish oil, which is a potential allergen. Jovie also contains choline and inositol, which Holle Goat Stage 2 lacks. Holle contains more calcium per 3-ounces prepared, but both formulas meet European and FDA standards for vitamin and mineral content.

Holle Goat Stage 2 vs Little Oak Follow On Goat Milk Formula

Little Oak’s line of goat milk formulas is produced in New Zealand. Their Follow On formula is a Stage 2 formula meant for babies 6 to 12 months old. Little Oak is not certified organic like Holle.

Little Oak contains a bit more fat per 100mL prepared and is made with a greater variety of vegetable oils, including coconut oil and flaxseed oil, than Holle. Both products source DHA from algae oil. Unlike Holle, Little Oak also contains added ARA, inositol, and choline.

Holle contains more iron than Little Oak, with 1 mg of iron versus 0.88 mg per 100mL prepared formula. Holle also contains more calcium with 75.2 mg versus 68.9 mg per 100mL prepared formula.

Bottom Line

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 is a nutritionally complete and organic goat’s milk formula for babies 6 to 10 months old. Goat’s milk contains more A2 protein and less lactose than cow’s milk, so babies sensitive to cow’s milk protein or lactose may digest goat’s milk formula better.

Goat’s milk formula is not an option for babies with a milk allergy or severe lactose intolerance. If you need help selecting a formula for your baby, speak with your child’s pediatrician for advice.

FAQ

Holle Goat Stage 2 is formulated for babies aged 6 to 10 months. If your infant has been fed Holle Goat Stage 1 during their first months of life, you should switch them to Holle Goat Stage 2 when they turn 6 months old. If your baby is 6 to 10 months old and you’re introducing formula for the first time to wean or supplement breastfeeding, you can start them on Holle Goat Stage 2.

The macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) are similar between Holle Goat Stage 1 and Stage 2, so both formulas should be equally filling. Holle Goat Stage 2 is for babies 6 to 10 months old. Babies this age tend to be starting solid foods and take fewer bottles in a day than younger babies so it may seem like they are more satiated on this formula.

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 1 is designed for newborn babies up to 6 months old and Holle Goat Stage 2 is for babies 6 to 10 months old. Holle Goat Stage 1 contains added choline and inositol, but Holle Goat Stage 2 does not. Holle Goat Stage 2 contains higher amounts of calcium and iron. Babies 6+ months old have increased iron needs as their fetal stores deplete by the six month mark.

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 is labeled for babies 6 to 10 months and Goat Stage 3 for babies 10 months and older. Both formulas have identical ingredient lists and are nutritionally similar.

Holle Dutch Goat Stage 2 should be prepared according to the feeding guidelines on the package. Clean drinking water should be heated to 104-122°F, then mixed with the designated number of formula scoops in a sanitized bottle. The water and formula mixture should be shaken until well combined.

The FDA only regulates products made in the United States. Holle Goat Stage 2 is manufactured in Europe, so the FDA standards do not apply. European formulas must meet the European Commission’s standards for baby formula, which are similar if not more stringent than the FDA’s.
